PAC-Car II is a joint project of ETH Zurich with partners from academia and industry. Our goal was to build a vehicle powered by a fuel cell system that uses as little fuel as possible. PAC-Car II set a new world record in fuel efficient driving during the Shell Eco-marathon in Ladoux (France) on June 26, 2005. PAC-Car II will not race anymore. Our main objectives now are the publication of articles and reports that explain the technical details of the system and the transfer of the know-how to all interested groups.
Prof. Lino Guzzella, Project Director, tells us about the motivation for PAC-Car II:
PAC-Car I and II have probed the actual fuel economy limits of road vehicles. They are an excellent breadboard to integrate and test the latest developments in materials, aerodynamics, structures and systems, and many other disciplines into one system. I am convinced that some of the ideas that have been generated in this project will eventually show up on the road and, following our main mission, contribute to saving fuel and reducing harmful pollutants of passenger cars.
